Why sell something outright when you can put it up for auction at a site like eBay or Yahoo auctions and possibly make quite a bit more money? Further, why would you buy something directly when you can shop on an online auction site and potentially save quite a bit of money? It is no secret that online auctions are incredibly popular. Online auctions are popping up all over the place. Ebay is still the most widely known but other online retailers are getting in on the act as well.
If you haven't ever bought or sold anything online before, here are a few tips to help you out.
1. Be aware of "classic auction strategy." This means that most people wait until the last few minutes of an auction to place a bid on the item they want to buy. They do this because they don't want to drive up the price of the item too quickly. They also want to increase their chances of winning the item. So if you want to purchase something you should refrain from bidding too high to early—it is likely you'll be outbid in the last couple of minutes. If you are selling something, don't worry if you don't get many bids for the first few days of your listing. Classic bidding strategy requires that bidders wait until the last few minutes before making an offer. You could still make quite a bit of money!
2. Before you place any bids, be sure to research the seller. Most online auction sites have a way for buyers and sellers to leave feedback for each other. It is in this feedback that you will learn just how quickly you can expect to receive your item or if a seller has a reputation for talking up items that turn out to be broken or shabby or not worth the price that they are asking. Find out if the seller has a habit of charging too much for shipping. You can also research your buyer—does he/she pay quickly? Is he/she hard to work with? Does he/she have a habit of returning items and asking for a refund? Feedback is the best way to find out if an auction is worth paying attention to.
3. If you are the seller, you should always be honest. Don't let the temptation to fudge the truth a little bit or Photoshop the images of your item to make it look like it is more valuable than it is. The more honest you are in your auctions, the better your reputation will be and the more likely you will be to earn a profit off of your auctions!
These are just three tips to keep in mind when you are buying things through online auctions. Be warned: online auctions can be incredibly addicting! Make sure you have someone watching your back to ensure that you don't suddenly start buying a whole bunch of items that you do not need or particularly want just because they are auctioning for very low prices!
